BIA teams up with top UK engineering biology stakeholders to champion the UK at SynBioBeta 2024

London, UK, Friday 3 May 2024 – The BioIndustry Association (BIA), the voice of the UK innovative life sciences and biotech industry, is gearing up for a prominent presence at SynBioBeta 2024, the world's leading conference for engineering biology. The BIA is leading a coalition of UK stakeholders to showcase the dynamism and innovation of the UK's engineering biology companies from 6-9 May in San Jose, California.

The UK will be the second largest delegation at SynBioBeta this year, thanks to support from the UK Government, a trade mission from Innovate UK, and coalition building from the BIA.

The BIA, National Physical Laboratory, SynbiCITE, and IBioIC, supported by the Department for Business and Trade are hosting the UK Pavilion, which will feature four innovative companies:

  • Neobe Therapeutics is developing next-generation gene and cell therapies to treat a wide range of diseases.
  • Solena Materials designs and creates biodegradable protein-based materials to replace unsustainable synthetics.
  • Evonetix creates long precise DNA strands on a chip, speeding up research in medicine, agriculture, and materials.
  • Green Bioactives develops and manufactures natural ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals using a sustainable plant cell culture technology.

These companies are at the forefront of developing solutions from sustainable materials and biomanufacturing to next-generation food production and novel therapeutics.

Alongside this, the UK Government is increasing its presence at the conference, with five Government departments in attendance, and most significantly, Innovate UK leading a trade mission of 15 UK start-ups.

The BIA will champion the UK as a place to do business with US companies and investors through:

  • A panel discussion on leveraging the UK’s trifecta value chain – bringing together experts from academia, industry, and government to discuss how the UK's collaborative approach can be a catalyst for the global bioeconomy
  • UK Birds of a Feather networking reception

In a significant step for the global bioeconomy, the panel discussion coincides with the launch of the "Engineering Biology Metrics and Technical Standards for the Global Bioeconomy" report. This crucial resource developed by a consortium of leading organisations addresses the need for standardisation across various aspects of engineering biology.

"The UK is a global leader in engineering biology, and we are thrilled to showcase the groundbreaking work of our member companies at SynBioBeta," said Steve Bates, CEO of the BIA. “The UK has by the way we work together seamlessly between industry, government and academia created a high-gear feedback loop enabling some of the most exciting engineering biology companies in the world, all working to solve global challenges through disruptive innovation for global sustainability.”
